Maulana Shaukat Ali Jauhar (1872-1939)


Elder son of Abdi Bano Beghum (Bi-Amma) and elder brother of Muhammad Ali Johar, Shaukat Ali was a dynamic Muslim Nationalist leader.

He assisted his brother in all his political, social and literary activities. He was imprisoned by the British on false accusations, for two years. His mother came to the fore front and look charge of Khilifat movement when her son were imprisoned.

She toured the length and breadth of India, addressing the large gatherings exhorting them to help preserve the unity and fraternity of the Muslim Ummah.

Nehru report was the turning point in his political carrier. Khilafat Committee rejected the report and he demanded separate electorates for the Muslims. He was the last president of the Khilafat conference. He attended first and second round table conferences in London and continued on he also organized the World Muslim conference in Jerusalem after his brother’s death.

In 1936, He joined All India Muslim League and became a close political ally and campaigner of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He served as a member of the Central Assembly from 1934 to 1938. He travelled over the Middle East and USA, building support for India’s Muslims and the struggle for independence.
